How To: Shorts and Tights

Deck the Halls Royals!

Being a fashion powerhouse is all about dressing outside “the lines”. I love this look because it’s not only unexpected, but it helps to prolong your Summer/Fall wardrobe! There are many ways to pull this look off no matter your personal style or body type. This is a great look for that office holiday party or a kickin’ New Years Eve bash. Let me give you a few tips on how to do it.

How To: Shorts & Tights

Tip #1: Let’s start with the shorts themselves. I personally love tweed, corduroy or wool shorts for this Winter look. Not only are the fabrics season appropriate, but the textures are divine! However, blue jean shorts are just as hot. This is also one instance where pleats seem to enhance the look without adding bulk to your frame. Remember to choose shorts that have pretty detailing such as cuffs or bows.

Tip #2: Don’t limit yourself to simple black opaque tights. With so many tights to choose from, the combinations are endless! Pair shorts with different colors, textures and patterns.

Tip #3: Throw on a boyfriend blazer. For me, it balances out the look and gives it a more relaxed feel. If the rest of your outfit is neutral, go ahead and throw on a bold blazer in a mustard yellow or cobalt blue. Aren’t you chic?

Tip #4: My shoe of choice with this look are boots, boots and more boots! Ankle boots like the one’s above in leopard are perfect for an evening or party look. Choose a neutral ankle boot to complement a day-time ensemble. And don’t forget about a tall calf-length boot like the ones Katie Holmes is wearing. They look just as gorgeous and keep you that much warmer.

Tip #5: Go BIG or go home! When it comes to accessories, the chunkier the better. Unless you’re so petite that your frame can’t take it, an over-sized structured bag, large chunky bangles and a cocktail ring compliments this look so well.

And last but not least remember to tweak this look according to your body type. Tuck in your blouse or sweater and add a belt to create an hourglass figure. If you’re petite- keep your shorts, tights and shoes the same color to trick the eye and create the illusion of longer legs. If you’re trying to hide a few extra pounds around your mid section, throw on a blazer and some sky-high heels- no one will be the wiser. They’ll be too distracted by those sexy legs of yours!

So tell me what you think! Is this a look that you’d try out? If you decide to take this outfit for a spin, let me know in the comment section below!
